Exploring LGBTQ+ Communities in Gaming: Gender Identity, Expression, and Social Dynamics

Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of LGBTQ+ gamers within the context of gaming communities, focusing on how these spaces affect their gender identity, social interactions, and mental health. Drawing on qualitative data collected through in-depth interviews with eight LGBTQ+ gamers, the study explores the multifaceted role of gaming as a platform for self-expression, community-building, and identity exploration. The findings reveal that gaming spaces offer LGBTQ+ individuals’ opportunities to experiment with gender presentation and receive affirmation through customizable avatars and role-playing games. However, the study also highlights challenges faced by LGBTQ+ gamers, including discrimination, harassment, and limited meaningful representation in games. The research underscores the need for inclusive game design and community management to promote safe and supportive gaming environments for marginalized players.
